Mentorship Program Overview Mission: To provide our Ed.D. students support and guidance via mentoring from our second year Ed.D. students, third year Ed.D. students, or an alumni as they transition into the doctoral program. Objective: To create an environment that fosters increased retention rates, increased student satisfaction, a community within the Ed.D. program, as well as personal and professional advancement through the sharing of academic and professional information. • MENTOR TRAINING
Benefits of Mentoring • Opportunity to give back and contribute to the future of the Ed.D. Program and its students • Promotes self-confidence and personal fulfillment • Increased connection to the Trojan Family • Personal fulfillment from investing in others • Opportunity to forge lasting relationships • Opportunity to discuss topics with another professional in a similar field • Opportunity to hone skills in a mentoring role • Facilitate in professional development • Collegiality and networking • MENTOR TRAINING
Roles and Responsibilities of being a Mentor • Provide advice and guidance regarding classes, professors, coursework, and study habits • Advocate for your mentee and provide encouragement, guidance, and support as they encounter challenges while they are in the Ed.D. Program • Make a commitment to be consistent and dependable • Refer your mentee to services in the university or to Ed.D. Office for additional administrative or academic support • There is no expectation that the mentors will take on the roles of parent, professional counselor, academic advisor, writing advisor, or social worker. • MENTOR TRAINING
Mentorship Program Requirements • Paperwork: • Contract • Mutual Contract • Mid-Year Review • Log of Communication • Minimum of 2 meetings (In-person, phone, skype, etc.) per semester • Check-in with your mentees at least once a month • Inform the Ed.D Office on the status of your mentoring relationship and respond to the emails. • Make an effort to attend and participate in Mentorship Program events, such as the Kick-Off, workshops, End-Of-The-Year-Bash • MENTOR TRAINING
The Mentoring Process: Making a Connection • Initial email contact • Introductions • Take the time to get to know your mentee and to provide relevant information about yourself • Topics might include experience in the Ed.D program, professional and academic history, educational philosophy, career goals, activities and interests, fun facts, etc. • Establishing expectations • Clarify appropriate methods of communication (emails, texts, video chat, etc.), when to contact, and how much contact is appropriate • Ideal Mentor Scale • Does your mentee need a role model, a coach, or a friend? • MENTOR TRAINING
The Ideal Mentor Scale by Gail Rose • Questionnaire designed for mentees to realize what they look for in the ideal mentor. • Benefits of Ideal Mentor Scale • Results will help you better understand what your mentee is expecting from the relationship. • Mentors can tailor their mentorship approach to suit their mentee’s unique needs. • MENTOR TRAINING
The Mentoring Process: Building Trust • Establish confidentiality • Make this a two-way process: Discuss mutual interests, share stories, and provide an equal amount of personal information • Set goals for the relationship • Match mentee’s enthusiasm about being a part of this program • Ensure your mentee feels that they can turn to you • MENTOR TRAINING
The Mentoring Process: Providing Support • Revisit goals to determine whether progress is being made, or whether new goals need to be set • Share opportunities with your mentee (professional development opportunities, networking connections, interesting articles, day of shadowing, etc.) • Regularly check-in with your mentee and initiate meetings • Utilize the mentor resource site for support • Attend and/or host workshops • MENTOR TRAINING
The Mentoring Process: • Concluding the Relationship • Reflect on your experiences together: What you have learned, how you have grown, etc. • Determine whether this relationship will continue or whether it should conclude • MENTOR TRAINING
