TheTrue Vine JOHN 15:1-4
Jesus - the “true” vine • Israel was the “vineyard” of God. • The disciples would eventually be barred from the synagogue & temple worship, and ostracized from the glory, tradition & beauty of Judaism • “Don’t be deceived. Life isn’t in Judaism. It’s not in religion. It’s in ME”
A misunderstood passage… • “takes away” Gr: Airo–to lift up, raise up; to pull up or take away • Jn 11:14 “Jesus lifts (airo) his eyes” • Luke 17 “lift (airo) up their voices” • “takes away” isn’t contextual, logical or linguistically accurate for believers, only Unbelievers.
Enter the vinedresser… • “Prunes” – Gr. Kathairoi.e. catharsis; to cleanse of unwanted elements • New branches, or branches that are heavy with unpicked fruit, sag and fall into the mud, get moldy and rotten. • Vinedresser cleanses & braces them
Now that you are clean… • Pruning removes what’s rotten or dead. Gets more sunlight to fruit-bearing branches. • Pruning increases size/quality of fruit and encourages new fruit to develop. • We are “pruned” by the Word.
A fruit-bearing branch… • Rom 1:13/Jn 4 – winning lost souls • Rom 6:22 – holiness • Rom 15:28 – financial giving as a fruit • Col 1 – helping practically • Heb 13 – fruit of our lips is praise • Gal 5:22 – fruit (Gr – carpos, sing.)
Why we each need pruning • Rotten fruit/sucker vines(bad habits, attitudes, relationships, priorities, distractions from our calling) drain us of our time/energy for what’s important to Jesus & His Kingdom • It prepares us for a new season of growth OR it can be used as a form of discipline
Abiding in the Vine… • 1 Jn 2:5b,6 “…By this we know that we are in Him; the one who says he abides in Him should walk as He walked.” • Abide: a permanency & sufficiency within. “If you abide in My Word” – very survival is dependent upon the abiding…
The challenge… • How’s your connection to Christ? • Are you just barely hanging on, falling in the mud, getting “moldy?” • Are you bearing minimal fruit, and unwilling to be cleansed and pruned? • Are you trying to grow your own fruit (your way)?
The encouragement… • Jn 15:15 “…I chose you, and appointed you that you should go & bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain (secure)…” • “Abide in Me….that your joy may be made full (complete)”
