CommunityHealth And Our Immigrant Community Presented by: Ruth Tow, Director of Clinical Operations at CommunityHealth
Who are our immigrant patients? • Naturalized Citizens • Permanent legal residents • Refugees • Visa holders • Undocumented – Recent focus of anti-immigrant sentiments • Many of our patients live in mixed status homes.
What languages do they speak? • 36% Chicagoans speak a language other than English at home • Reflected in the 32 primary languages spoken by our patients Most Commonly Spoken Languages at CommunityHealth • Spanish • English • Polish
What are some “new” concerns? • Anxiety – immigrants in general • Harassment • Losing legal status • Impact of fear on patients –especially for undocumented patients • Not coming to appointments/lost to care • Depression • Refusing/not following up on outside referrals • Not applying for government assistance programs for children that are citizens • Isolating themselves • Not reporting crimes
Our response to concerns? • Held workshop on-site for patients to help them prepare in case they are separated from their family • Updated visitor policy and protocols • Held on-site staff training through ICIRR and attended other events to be well informed • Encouraging patients to seek counseling • Updated registration forms • Safe space signage • Remaining positive • Continuing the sense of community that patients enjoy here at CommunityHealth.
