  1. WHAT CAUSES EXCESSIVE HAIR GROWTH IN WOMEN?

  2. Hirsutism We all have fine, light-colored hair that is referred to as “peach fuzz” or Vellus hair which is perfectly normal. However, when women develop excessive facial or body hair, it is a result of a condition known as hirsutism. Hirsutism is a result of an over production of male hormones or testosterone causing a hormonal imbalance. However this is not the only cause of excessive hair in women. There are four main causes:

  3. MAIN CAUSE #1 Hormonal Imbalance All women have a certain amount of male hormones, however women who produce high levels of male hormones sometimes suffer from a condition known as PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. PCOS causes small cyst or fluid-filled sacs to form on the ovaries. Cushings syndrome causes tumors in the adrenal glands and also causes hormonal imbalances in women - leading to excessive hair growth in women. Other hormonal changes in women who are in pre-menopausal and post-menopausal stages of their life can also cause an increase in male hormones or testosterone levels.

  4. MAIN CAUSE #2 Medication Steroid’s can spur hair growth Also some antidepressants, antibiotics and sleeping medications. The consumption of these types of drugs are often common causes of excessive hair growth.

  5. MAIN CAUSE #3 Genetics Unfortunately Hirsutism can run in families. If your mother has it, you as well as any sisters are more likely to have it as well. It is also more common in Middle Eastern, South Asian and Mediterranean women.

  6. MAIN CAUSE #4 Stress Probably the least known cause. During periods of stress, the adrenal glands become hyperactive and pumps out stress hormones, resulting in excessive hair growth. That bad day at the office isn’t the problem, it is the long continuous periods of stress that causes the problem.

  7. How do you treat excessive hair growth? We recommend that you seek medical treatment to have your hormone levels checked, as you may need drug therapy. However, although Doctors can prescribe drugs, it’s important to know that when you stop using the medication, hair will grow back.

  8. Laser Hair Removal Laser hair removal uses a concentrated light ray that damages the hair follicle. Damaged hair follicles cannot produce hair and the hair that is present falls out. With sufficient treatments, laser hair removal will result in long lasting, permanent hair reduction, providing the fastest, efficient and cost effective way of hair removal.
