Gyeongju Known as the ‘Museum without Walls’ because of the vast number of cultural properties and archaeological sites of the city, Gyeongju was the former capital of the Silla Kingdom, which ruled Korea from the 7th to the 9th centuries. Donggungwon, or East Palace Garden, and Gyeongju Bird Park are the modern reinterpretation of East Palace and Wolji in the form of botanical garden and bird park. Also known as Anapji, Donggung and Wolji were the palace’s official garden and pond built in 674 or the 14th year of the reign of King Munmu of the Silla Dynasty
Cheonmado (”the heavenly horse”) The painting of the Cheonmado was finished with birch bark, which is said be related to the birch background of the painting of cheonmado excavated from the Cheonmachong (Sky horse tomb)

Gyeongju, home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is imbued with the aura of tradition dating back to the Silla Kingdom. Gyeongju was founded in 57 BC as capital of the Kingdom of Silla, and remained its seat of power for nigh on a thousand years – the Silla dynasty got through a whopping 56 monarchs before collapsing in 935. As a result, the city has more historic sites than anywhere else in the country. Locals often refer to it as a “Museum without Walls”, on account of the regal burial mounds spread liberally not just inside the city, but throughout the fields and forests outside the centre
