Sintra, a picturesque Portuguese town set amidst the pine-covered hills of the Serra de Sintra is known for its many 19th-century Romantic architectural monuments. Quinta da Regaleira, a fairytale-like estate located near Sintra-Vila is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the “Cultural Landscape of Sintra”. The Regaleira Chapel is a Roman Catholic Chapel, and stands in front of the palace's main façade
Built in the Neo-Manueline style, the Capel is decorated by scenes of the life of Jesus Christ
The capel contains also many symbols of the Knights Templar and their successors in Portugal, the Knights of Christ
© Guiasnomadas The Chapel of Holy Trinity is the first of the buildings constructed in 1904. Manini employed artisans from Coimbra for the Buçaco Palace and the same people worked at Regaleira but also included artisans from Sintra
The Italian architect Luigi Manini had come to Portugal in 1879 to design the Lisbon São Carlos Opera House. His most notable work was the Buçaco Palace Hotel in 1888 before he undertook the Quinta da Regaleira
Carvalho Monteiro was born in 1848, the son of a wealthy Portuguese family who lived in Brazil and whose fortunes were made from the monopoly of the coffee trade and precious stones. In Portugal he was known as ‘Monteiro dos Milhões’ – Monteiro of the Millions
A highly intelligent and cultured man, Monteiro had a vast library and a passion for collecting books, shells, butterflies, antiques and clocks. He was educated at the University of Coimbra and obtained his law degree in 1871
After his death in 1920 his library was purchased by Maurice Ettinghausen in 1926 and sent to London. It was later purchased by the Magg Brothers and sold to the Washington Library of Congress where it remains today
Here and throughout the estate one sees influences of Christianity and the Order of the Templar's as well as Masonic and mythology scenes
The Regaleira chapel is pure white, charming and small, yet opulent in its own way
The Chapel was built in the Neo-Manueline style (decorative arts style developed in Portugal between the middle of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century)
Despite its relatively small size, the chapel has several floors
The Chapel is small, with a main altar. The walls have murals and venetian mosaic and stained glass are other decorations here
The frescoes contain representations of Teresa of Ávila and Saint Anthony, as well as other religious depictions. Meanwhile, the floor itself offers depictions of the armillary sphere of the Portuguese discoveries and the Order of Christ Cross, surrounded by pentagrams
Manini designed an unusual and remarkable assemblage of details for subsequent moulding, casting and carving, travelling to Italy in 1908 and comissioning the work to be carried out at Giuseppe Guelfi’s atelier in Milan
A stairway leads down to the crypt, a simple room with a main altar in the same position as the one above. The crypt has a subterranean passage that links it with the Main House
