Sintra, a picturesque Portuguese town set amidst the pine-covered hills of the Serra de Sintra is known for its many 19th-century Romantic architectural monuments. Quinta da Regaleira, an estate located near Sintra-Vila is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the “Cultural Landscape of Sintra”. Much of the four hectares of land in the surrounding estate consists of a densely treed park lined with myriad roads and footpaths. The woods are neatly arranged in the lower parts of the estate, but are left wild and disorganized in the upper parts, reflecting Carvalho Monteiro's belief in primitivism. Decorative, symbolic, and lively structures can be found throughout the park
Yucca gigantea (Yucca elephantipes) Agapanthus africanus (African lily, lily of the Nile)
The park also contains an extensive and enigmatic system of tunnels, which have multiple entry points that include: grottoes, the chapel, Waterfall Lake, and "Leda's Cave," which lies beneath the Regaleira Tower. The "Initiation Well" connects to other tunnels via a series of underground walkways. At the bottom of the hill, the “Promenade of the Gods” (Patamar dos Deuses) is an alley that links the Pisoes Loggia to the Main House, with statues of classical gods: Venus, Flora, Ceres, Fortune, Hermes, Dionysus, Orpheus, Pan and Vulcan
The Pisões Loggia is a neo-Manueline structure which provides a side entrance to the gardens of the Quinta da Regaleira. Beneath its stone canopy, steps lead down to a (locked) gate leading onto the road (Av. Barbosa do Bocage) below

In Roman mythology, Flora is a Sabine-derived goddess of flowers and of the season of spring – a symbol for nature and flowers
Flora The lower gardens have a lot of fantastic ferns, both in tree forms and lower sorts Flora
Ceres Flora
In ancient Roman religion, Ceres was a goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and motherly relationships
Ceres is a goddess of the common people; she doesn't just govern over agriculture, but also over fertility in general
Mercury Fortuna
Mercury is a major Roman god
Mercury is the patron god of financial gain, commerce, eloquence (and thus poetry), messages/com-munication (including divination), travelers, boundaries, luck, trickery and thieves; he is also the guide of souls to the underworld
Bacchus is the Roman name for Dionysus, the god of wine and intoxication. He is the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine, of ritual madness, fertility, theatre and religious ecstasy
Orpheus was a musician, poet and prophet in Greek mythology and Pan is the god of the wild, shepherds and flocks, nature of mountain wilds and rustic music, and companion of the nymphs
Vulcan (Hephaestus) is the god of fire including the fire of volcanoes, metalworking, and the forge in ancient Roman religion and myth
‘Regaleira’ was built by (the owner) Antonio Augusto Carvalho Monteiro in conjunction with the renowned Italian opera set designer and architect Luigi Manini. These two noblemen conspired to create a place of divine magic and mystery embodying a combination of styles including Roman, Gothic, Renaissance and Manueline
