GRAFFITAGE Development of a newanti-graffiti system, based ontraditional concepts, preventingdamage of architectural materials Prague, Czech Republic 31ST MAY – 3RD JUNE 2006
The Problem of Graffiti • Graffiti is a major, increasing danger to Architectural Heritage • materials • This problem has a very important social, technical and cultural • dimension, affecting to more than 3.500.000 protected European • monuments • Apart from aesthetic aspects, interactions of graffiti with substrate, as well as cleaning procedures, threaten historical substance
The Problem of Graffiti Two major kind of coatings are currently being used for protecting surfaces against graffiti: • SACRIFICIAL • Sometimes used in monuments • Not an appropriate solution, • since removal procedures can • damage substrates • PERMANENT • Suited for materials of low • porosity • Do not fit requirements of • porous ancient materials
MAIN OBJECTIVE Development of a modern reversible anti-graffiti and waterproofing treatment specially designed for Cultural Heritage Design and development of a new anti-graffiti product at lab scale, for further establishment of its suitability for porous ancient materials by appropriate tests Establishment of the suitability of the new anti-graffiti system by means of basic lab tests, with regards to currently used commercial systems
OBJECTIVES Establishment of the durability of ancient materials treated with respect to currently used commercial systems, and of proper cleaning procedures; determination of the efficiency of the new system • Validation of the new anti-graffiti system on porous substrates of Architectural Heritage, by means of field tests Elaboration of a knowledge-based guideline regarding strategies for the protection of Cultural Heritage against graffiti aggressions
NEW ANTI-GRAFFITI Based in a totally new formulation made by complexation of polyampholites with polymeric amines modified by fluorocarbon residues MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE NEW SYSTEM • Low surface energy • Permanent under out-door conditions • Reversible to specially designed mild cleaning systems • Permeable to water vapour • Impermeable to liquid water • Transparent and matt
Expected Achievements and Impact • Development of the new protective system appropriate application • and cleaning methods and tools • Knowledge based decision-making guideline regarding strategies for the protection of Cultural Heritage against graffiti aggressions • After further RTD and industrial development when finishing the project, this new protectiveproduct could be commercialized mainly by SME’s involved in this market • Important industrial impact, having a strong influence in the market share of variety of industrial sectors
Expected Achievements and Impact • Strong economic and societal impact – contribution to the benefit of the European society by promoting the adequate conversation of monuments and other Cultural Heritage Results achieved so far
