  4. Stool softeners / Surfactants • Site of Action: Small and large intestine • Onset of Action: 12 - 72 hours • Examples: docustate (Colace, Diocto) • Stool softeners help mix fluid into stools to soften them. This makes stools easier to pass out of the body.

Colace (cont) • Colace is used for prevention of dry, hard stools. • DIRECTIONS: Adults and children 12 years and older: 1 to 4 capsules Children 6 to 12 years old: 1 to 2 capsules • PRECAUTION: The highest dose should be taken until the first bowel movement; thereafter, a lower dose should be taken for maintenance. The effect of Colace on the stools may not be apparent until 1 to 3 days after the first oral dose.

  7. Hyperosmotic agents • Site of Action: Colon • Onset of Action: 0.5 - 3 hours • Examples: Glycerinsuppositories, Sorbitol, Lactulose, and Polyethylene glycol (PEG). • PEG found more effective in children than lactulose
