  2. What is deaf culture? -Sharing the same language - use the ASL ( American Sign Language ) -Deaf Institutes where ASL, deaf culture and deaf sports are shared

  3. What is deaf culture? -Deaf Clubs- once popular in the past, now on decline because of the technology -Deaf sports including Deaf Olympics (Curtis Pride, Kenny Walker, Dummy Hoy)

  4. What is deaf culture? -The visual arts- reflecting ASL, fingerspelling, pride and oppression -Performing arts- Deaf theatre and movie “Children of a Lesser God”

  5. What is deaf culture? -ASL Literature- ASL storytelling, ASL poetry, ASL jokes, ASL cartoons -Shared oppression- audism- hearing people who show a negative or oppressive attitude towards deaf people

Important Deaf People-Thomas Hopkin Gallaudet • Thomas Gallaudet was born on June 3, 1822 – August 27, 1902 in Conn. • Trinity College in Harford • Teaching at NYID-M • 1864- Gallaudet's youngest son, Edward Miner Gallaudet, built the first college for deaf students and became the college's first president.

School: Central Institute for the Deaf, Alabama School of Fine Arts & Hoover High School . Marriage: John McCallum Children: two children in Atlanta, Georgia
