tERMINOLOGY • Color- the special quality of light reflected from a given surface, also referred to as “hue” • Value- the proportion of light or dark in a color • Tint- anything lighter than the normal value • Shade- anything darker than the normal value • Saturated color- a hue so strong that it is as pure as it can be • Desaturated color- a hue that is lowered in intensity, also called muted color
Effects of color on the viewer • Color attracts attention • Bright or saturated colors on the objects of greatest interest and placing them against a contrasting background, draws attention • Colors contribute to three-dimensionality • Colors such as red, orange, yellow and lavender are advancing colors (appear to be closer to camera) • Colors such as beige, green, and pale blue are receding colors
Colors create an impression or feeling of temperature • Warm colors are advancing colors- red, orange, yellow, and lavender • Cool colors are receding colors- blues, greens, and beige
Expressionistic use of color • Expressionism is a dramatic or cinematic technique that attempts to present the inner reality of a character • Usually it distorts or exaggerates normal perception
Surrealistic use of color • Surrealism is a dramatic or cinematic technique that uses fantastic imagery in an attempt to portray the workings of the subconscious • Surrealistic images have an oddly dreamlike or unreal quality
