Divergent Boundaries • This is a location where the two plates are moving away from each other • This typically causes seafloor spreading as seen in the Atlantic Ocean • It can also cause Rift Valleys like the one in East Africa if the boundary is on a continental crust
Convergent Boundary • This is when two plates are moving towards each other • One of two things then occurs • One option is that one plate slides under the other, this is called a subduction zone, and the Western United States is a good example of this • Another is that the two collide and fold, creating mountain ranges like the Rocky mountains
Transform Boundary • This is when one plate slides laterally past another plate • The San Andreas fault in California is an example of a transform boundary • This is responsible for very shallow and damaging earthquakes
