Tullianum/ Mamertine By: Mac Rechan Period 3
Location • The prison was located in the Roman Forum • Lied upon the NE slope of the Capitoline Hill, directly facing the Curia • Between the Tullianum and Tabularium was a flight of stairs leading to the Arx of the Capitoline. http://www.emersonkent.com/map_archive/forum_romanum.htm
Origin • The Tullianum prison was built by Ancus Marcius. • It was constructed around the time of his reign, between 640-616 BCE. • Originally, the the Tullianum was used as a cistern for a spring which was thought to be used to dispose of corpses. • It is believed that the dungeon to the prison was later added by the ruler Servus Tullius.
Importance and use • The prison was used as a place to hold previously condemned suspects until their eventual execution, which would take place in the Tullianum (dungeon of the prison). • Prisoners held here were not held for long, as their stay in the prison was often short as they awaited trial or death. • Located near the Roman courts, in order to make imprisonment more efficient and easier to manage.
