What is a poetry slam? • Performing poetry in a competitive manner • Performers choose a topic important to them and write a poem in the format of their choice. Recite the poem using voice, literary terms, and movement Performers are judged by members of an audience and scored on a scale from one to ten
What are the rules? • All poems must be your own work. You cannot choose a poem someone else wrote and read it. • You will have 3 minutes or less to perform your poem.
What kind of poem do I write? • You can write any type of poem. Most poetry slam contestants write free verse poems. • Free verse poems do not have a set rhyme or rhythm. There are no rules about line length. NOTE: Think of free verse as spoken music!
What do I write about? Anything!! You get to choose! (As long as it’s appropriate) Suggestions: Friends Family Teen Issues Sports Vacations Nature Love Dislikes Hobbies * Make sure to choose something you are care about! *
