Odisha Faces MSP Hike Pressure
With Chhattisgarh Government announcing Minimum Support Price (MSP) for a Quintal of Paddy to Rs.2500, Odisha Government has come under tremendous pressure to hike MSP in the State.
During the election campaign, Congress President Rahul Gandhi announced that if Congress comes to power than MSP will be Rs.2500 Per Quintal. After that in Chhattisgarh collection of paddy was stalled as farmers stopped sending their paddy to mandis and paddy procurement came to a halt in the state.
According to estimate done by the State Government, production of a Quintal of Paddy costs a farmer Rs.2930, accordingly Odisha Legislative Assembly passed a Resolution for hiking MSP to Rs.2950 Per Quintal.
If the State hikes MSP of Rs.2950 Per Quintal as per the resolution passed by State Legislative Assembly, then the expenditure will be over Rs.6000 Crore. While Chhattisgarh Government was providing subsidy of Rs.300 Per Quintal over the MSP of Rs.1750, Odisha Government was even not in a mood to provide the same.
