2. The Scientific Method The Scientific Method has several steps:
A natural phenomenon is observed
A hypothesis (proposed explanation) is made
An experiment is performed
Results are obtained
The hypothesis is supported or disproved
Any scientific explanation is called a theory
3. The Scientific Method The Nature of Science:
Science is based on observations and measurements, not on belief or dogma.
We learn in science, not by proving something true, but by proving something else to be false.
All scientific knowledge is tentative.
There is not just one method.
4. The Scientific Method The Nature of Science:
Scientific knowledge is consistent with evidence, subject to change and open to criticism.
Models are used to help study natural things and processes.
Science has many disciplines but the knowledge forms a unified whole.
5. The Scientific Method Some major figures in science:
Curie
Mendel
Darwin
Galileo
Hutton
Mendeleev
Einstein
Dalton
6. The Scientific Method Some major events in science:
DNA structure
Big bang theory
Atomic imaging
Light bending in gravitational fields
7. The Metric System The Metric System is used for measurement.
Length is measured in units of the meter.
Volume is measured in units of the liter.
Mass is measured in units of kilograms.
Time is measured in units of seconds.
