Autism- a neurobehavioral syndrome marked by qualitative impairments of social interaction and communication, and by restricted, repetitive , and stereotyped patterns of behavior. • condition disturbing perceptions and relationships: a disturbance in psychological development in which use of language, reaction to stimuli, interpretation of the world, and the formation of relationships are not fully established and follow unusual patterns.
Autism Spectrum Disorders • Autistic Disorder -qualitative impairment of communication (delay or total absence of spoken language) -qualitative impairment of social interaction (lack of social or emotional reciprocation) -repetitive, restricted patterns of behavior (ritualistic)
Asperger Syndrome • At mild end of spectrum • Impairment of all social areas • Most have average or above average intelligence • Intense interest in a particular subject • Inflexible adherence to routines
