Job Demands • College grads looking to start in the business need a high level of creativity and strong communication and computer skills. • It is a highly competitive industry and environment so enthusiasm and motivation are key. • A keen sense of what works and what doesn’t work makes a great advertiser stand out in a crowd.

  4. Industry Location • Fortunately, there is a need for advertising in every corner of the world. The market is everywhere and expanding all the time. • From small, local businesses to international corporations, any and all businesses need to market themselves and present an image to the public. Advertising appears on television, radio, in newspapers and magazines, on billboards and everywhere in between. Its inescapable and good advertising stands out to consumers.

  5. How it’s affected by the economy • Advertising is a main component of our economy • Promotes competition • In turn, creates jobs • Increases company profits

  6. Outsourcing • In an ad agency, an account director works for their client. A client might be a local clothing store or it could be Nike, hoping to reach out to consumers in Asia. • An account director is tasked with pleasing the client and that may require traveling to new areas and working with new people to get the job done. It is a very hands-on business though, so outsourcing a job or client is a highly unlikely situation.

  8. Local Businesses • There are several high profile advertising agencies in the Buffalo region: Design Department Inc., Quinlan and Company, Promotional Edge Advertising or DXO Communications. Advertising is necessary in the biggest of cities AND the smallest of towns and it is incredibly lucrative. • There are opportunities to work in the field all over the country and the world.

  9. Wages • Different positions receive different salaries • Account Manager - $66,000 • Art Director - $94,000 • Graphic Design Specialist - $58,000 • Media Planner - $48,000 • Advertising Executive - $159,000

  10. Potential Growth • Advertising is a constantly expanding medium. Innovation is key in such a creative business and evolution is a term consistently paired with the industry. • The world of social media is currently impacting the way ad agencies are reaching consumers. Twitter and Facebook have revolutionized the way the Internet can be used to sell a product, idea or brand to a consumer. • Smart ad agencies never rest though. The next big idea is always waiting to be uncovered. Discovering previously untapped resources or uncovering new ones are the bread and butter of the industry.

  11. Why we chose it • Advertising is an interesting business. Its unpredictable and constantly changing. • Finding what works and what fails is an unpredictable science. It’s a challenge to figure out what interests consumers and what turns them away.

  12. Experiences • We are all influenced by advertising, everyday. Up to 5000 times a day. Whether it’s a TV ad or just a logo. • It is in our faces, ears and eyes at all times. A truly inescapable medium.

  13. Why we are passionate about it • We’re passionate about it because it presents something new everyday. • There are new ways to advertise being developed as we speak. Different companies take different and exciting approaches to attract consumers and watching to see if they succeed or fail is interesting and exciting.
