Recall the steps for adding or subtracting rational expressions: • Find a least common denominator by factoring the polynomials in each denominator. • Multiply each rational expression top and bottom by the missing factor(s) in the LCD. • Multiply out the polynomials in each numerator, but leave the denominators as they are (in factored form). • Add or subtract the resulting numerator polynomials and put the result over the factored LCD polynomial. • Simplify if needed, by seeing if you can factor the numerator polynomial, then cancelling any common factors.
Example Subtract the following rational expressions. Note that 6 – 2x = -2x + 6 = -1(2x - 6)
Example Subtract the following rational expressions. Note that 3 = 3/1, so the LCD is just (2x - 3)
Example Add the following rational expressions.
Question #5 on HW 6.2B: Be aware that the software expects any GCF to be factored out of the numerator. (i.e. in the problem below, the answer would be marked wrong if the numerator was entered as 2x + 24.)
