The use of “ser” to identify people • The verb “ser” rather than “estar” is used to identify people. This is because in Spanish, “ser” is used to connect the subject with the predicate nominative. In other words, if what follows the verb “to be” renames the subject, “ser” is used. (Hint: If the verb “to be” means =, use “ser.”) La mujer es una vecina. The woman = a neighbor
In Spanish, un and una are used to mean a or an when identifying people. However, unos/unas (some) are not used as frequently in Spanish. ¿Quién es ella? = Who is she? Ella es una vecina. = She is a neighbor. ¿Quiénes son ellos? = Who are they? Ellos son vecinos. They are neighbors.
He is (un hombre). She is (una mujer). I used to be (un bebé). They will be (vecinos). You all are (hermanos).(formal) She will be (una madre). We are (habitantes). Es un hombre. Es una mujer. Yo era un bebé. Ellos serán vecinos. Uds. son hermanos. Ella será una madre. Somos habitantes. Identifying people
El uso de “ser” con los trabajos • In Spanish, we don’t use the indefinite articles un/una before professions, unless an adjective follows. I am a teacher. = Soy profesora. I am a teacher. ≠ Soy una profesora. I am a good teacher.= Soy una profesora buena.
Somos estudiantes. Seré médico. Él era actor. Ella es profesora. Ellos son dentistas. Fuiste cajero. A Uds. les toca • We are (estudiantes). • I will be (médico). • He used to be (actor). • She is (profesora). • They are (dentistas). • You (Tú) were (cajero).
