  3. Teaching Material • Theme • The first period of the unit • Teaching content • ---warming up: vocabulary concerning volcano; • ---listening: volcanologists; model “Expressing joy, fear and anxiety” • ---speaking: use the expressions expressing joy, fear or anxiety .

Teaching Goals • Knowledge objectives: ---vocabulary concerning volcano and natural forces ---expressions expressing joy, fear and anxiety • Ability objectives: ---improve listening ability and listening skills ---to improve students’ spoken English • Emotion objectives: ---to arouse interest in the power of nature; ---To build up confidence and cooperative consciousness.

  5. Teaching Method • Task-based Teaching Approach • student-centered classroom setting • affection and an intimate relationship between the teacher and the learners • Teaching aids: multimedia, blackboard and hand-outs.

  7. Teaching Procedure • Step 1 Lead in • 1. talk about the Wenchuan Earthquake to lead in the topic. • 2. Brainstorm game: to name some natural disasters to activate background knowledge.

  8. Teaching Procedure • Step 2 Warming up • introduce some technical vocabulary concerning volcanoes with the help of a diagram so as to develop students’ understanding of what a volcano is and shows a volcano erupting.

  9. Teaching Procedure • Step 3 Listening 1. Pre-listening ---look at the pictures and make guesses ( what happened? What problems? How they feel?) 2. First listening: Task 1---listen for the general idea and write down their names

  10. Teaching Procedure 3. Second listening Task 2--- listen and find out when the volcanologists no longer frightened. 4. Third listening • Task 3---listen for expressions expressing fear and anxiety and fill in the blanks.

  11. Teaching Procedure • Step 4 Speaking • 1. Task 4---Practice reading the expressions to imitate the speakers’ stress and intonation

  12. Teaching Procedure • 2. Task 5---Describe your own experience • (1) show a chart of words and expressions indicating joy, fear and anxiety • (2) think of a powerful natural force or imagine one • (3) provide two situations to choose • (4) group work: S1—tell experience and feelings; S2--ask questions ; S3-- take notes; S4--report to the class.
