COURSE OVERVIEW Anthropology is a social science not a biological science like history, Sociology, Economics & Political science which is one of the popular optional subjects in UPSC/IAS/PSC exam. The term anthropology comes in the Greek anthropos, meaning an individual being. Anthropology is comprehensive scientific research of human biology as well as civilization. It strives to comprehend precisely what defines us as people and to describe how we have to be the way we're. History, philosophy, biology, and also a few other academic areas will also be interested in studying what it means to be human. Anthropologists usually differ in their inclusive, holistic strategy --that they are interested in learning about both the cultural and biological aspects of humankind around the world and through time. They recognize the substantial variability of our experience necessitates an impartial cultural relativity strategy and cross-cultural comparisons to understand it. Also, they have come to realize that individuals can't be recognized by analyzing either their biological makeup or their cultural customs independently.
Thus anthropology is a holistic study of man i.e. studying man in totality where as other social science studying man in an atomistic manner in dealing with man in part manner. As far as anthropology syllabus in UPSC/PCS is considered the 1st paper deals with world anthropology i.e. socio cultural and biological evolution and variations across the world. While the 2nd paper is associated with Indian anthropology i.e. socio-cultural and biological evolution and variations of mankind to be studied in the Indian context. Thus, the syllabus is well intended to consistently pursue the tradition of anthropology i.e. holism.
