Introduction • This is an analysis of the best selling books in a hot category—Microsoft’s new .NET framework • The data was taken obtained using Amazon.com’s web service using the following process: • build a simple Excel Visual Basic for Applications to find all books with a certain search string in their title • the program returns the list of books, their price, sales rank, availability and publisher • retrieve all .NET books as of 3/27/03 • develop a categorization scheme for the books based on their titles • general programming, ASP, ADO, Visual Basic, C#, special topics (e.g., remoting or web services) • analyze the data using PivotTables • produce PowerPoint presentation using Mekko Graphics • The presentation follows.
Overview of Top 100 .NET Books Two publishers—Wrox and Microsoft dominate books. While ASP is the most popular topic, .NET topics covered are evenly mixed.
Sales and Price of .NET Books by Topic Exam preparation are also the best sellers and the highest priced.
Sales and Price of .NET Books by Publisher Que’s books are the best sellers. Microsoft’s are the highest priced.
The Publishers Focus on Different Topics There are opportunities for Microsoft Press in many topics, including ASP. Wrox has a significant opportunity in the strong selling exam topic.
