  2. T&P Guideline Goals • Clear set of guidelines and procedures leading to tenure and promotion to assistant professor • Annual Review • Third Year Review • Tenure/Promotion Review • Create common structure to T&P documents to aid faculty and committees during deliberations and discussions

  3. T&P Guideline Format I. Overview A. All candidates for tenure and/or promotion must meet with departmental, college, and university eligibility criteria in effect at the time of application. B. Department background or mission statement (optional). Some departments start with a brief description: history, mission statement, statement about the importance of T&P procedures, etc. C. General philosophy regarding teaching, service, and research II. Annual Reviews/Evaluations A. How are they conducted? B. Is T&P Committee involved, some other committee, or just Chair or Director?

  4. T&P Guideline Format con’t III. Mid-tenure Reviews A. How are they conducted? B. When? IV. Criteria for Tenure and Promotion to Associate Professor A. Length of service B. Appropriate degree C. Teaching D. Research E. Service F. Etc.

  5. T&P Guideline Format con’t V. Criteria for Promotion to Full Professor A. Length of service D. Research B. Appropriate degree E. Service C. Teaching F. etc…. VI. Application Process A. When/how candidate notifies department chair of intent to apply for T and/or P B. Dossier must conform to university and college requirements. C. External review letters: minimum number (4), how referees are selected, no more than 1 may be major advisor or collaborator of candidate, etc. D. Departmental requirements (supplemental materials).

  6. T&P Guideline Format con’t VII. Composition and Functioning of Departmental Committee A. Inclusion criteria B. Exclusion criteria C. How/when is chair elected? D. Quorum and minimum committee size E. If committee falls below minimum size, how are additional members selected? F. Voting procedures (secret ballot; counted as voted for each candidate or counted at end) G. The committee’s recommendation and supporting statement are delivered to the department chair. Different for Full Professor promotion

  7. T&P Guideline Format con’t • VII. Composition & Functioning of Department Committee • H. The department chair’s recommendation is independent of the T&P committee recommendation • If department chair applies for T and/or P, the dossier goes directly from the department committee to the college. • J. Chair’s vote is separate and not bound to follow committee vote. • K. Only committee members who have reviewed dossiers and participated in discussions may vote. • L. Chair is not part of committee deliberations. • M. Department chair notifies applicant of progress-to-date
