Leaning On The Everlasting Arms “The eternal God is a dwelling place, And underneath are the everlasting arms…” (Deut. 33:27).
We Cultivate: • Self-reliance – Emerson’s essay. • Independence and Self-sufficiency. • Do these sound like terms you would use to describe yourself. • The tornado victim in Ringgold, “We don’t like to depend on others…” • God wants us to learn dependence.
Look At His Heroes • Judges 7:2 – Gideon • David and Goliath • John 15:1-4 • 2 Cor. 3:5 • Matt. 7:25ff
Major Hindrance To Dependence • Abundance • A constant problem in Judges • Luke 18, Rich ruler, and the lesson, vs. 24-30 • We need to pray for ourselves • Give glory and thanks to God. • He blessed us with skills and opportunity.
A Constant Problem With Vision • 2 Cor. 12:7-10 • We pray for removal of pain, sickness, unemployment, grief. • But these help us rely on God and others.
Blessing of Dependence • Greater gratitude – Luke 12:16 (note “I” and “my”.) • Dan. 4:30 – Nebuchadnezzar’s arrogance (but God spoke to him). • Dan. 5:21-21 – “Hopefully when we have a Neb. Moment we will be humbled like he was, and not behave like Belshazzar. We don’t want to see the handwriting on the wall.” (Ryan) • Pray – “Give me whatever it takes to equip me for heaven.” • Psalm 121.
