Training Course: Planning for Developing Population Size Estimates for Key Populations at Increased Risk of HIV 24-28 August, Tehran, Iran Session 7.1 Direct Size Estimation methods – Census Taking Methods
Census taking methods - overview • Visiting all sites in a defined geographic area • Develop an estimate for the number of key population members at each site • Sum the numbers across the sites
Overview (con’t) • Typically involves two levels of listing • Level one involves key informants listing sites and giving rough estimates of the number of key population who frequent the site • Level two mapping involves actually visiting the site and observing the number of people at the site
When is census taking appropriate? • For capturing “visible” portion of the population • So who will be “missed”? • For sex workers? • For MSM? • For PWID?
Potential for over or underestimating • What factors may lead to over estimating the size of the key population? • What factors may lead to underestimating the size of the key population?
Potential for over or underestimating • Mobility of the population • Frequency of visiting the sites • Misclassification (misreading gestures, cues) • People who do not frequent sites at all
