  1. DEVELOPING A STRONG THESIS STATEMENT

  2. It must be debatable • Any argumentative or persuasive piece of writing must begin with a debatable thesis or claim. • People should be able to reasonably differ on it. • If your thesis is something that is generally agreed upon or accepted as fact, then there is no reason to try to persuade people.

  3. EQUATION FOR THESIS • THESIS=OBSERVATION +EXPLANATION

  4. What is a thesis statement? • It is a road map for your paper. It tells the reader what to expect from the rest of your paper. • It directly answers the question asked of you. • It makes a claim that someone might disagree with. **think of it as a funnel…Everything flows out of it.

  5. HOW DO I GET A THESIS • A thesis is the product of a lengthy thinking process. • Before you come up with a thesis, you must collect and organize evidence, then look for ways your facts are connected.

  6. HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE A STRONG THESIS? • Do you answer the question posed in the topic? • Have you taken a position someone might disagree with? • Is your thesis specific? • Does it pass the “so what” test? • Does your evidence come from your thesis? • Does it pass the “how” and “why” test?

  7. Tips for Writing a Thesis Statement • Your thesis should be specific—it should only address what you will discuss in your paper and what you have evidence to support. • Your thesis should be the last sentence of the first paragraph of your paper. • If your paper topic changes, your thesis must change also.
