HOW DO I GET A THESIS • A thesis is the product of a lengthy thinking process. • Before you come up with a thesis, you must collect and organize evidence, then look for ways your facts are connected.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE A STRONG THESIS? • Do you answer the question posed in the topic? • Have you taken a position someone might disagree with? • Is your thesis specific? • Does it pass the “so what” test? • Does your evidence come from your thesis? • Does it pass the “how” and “why” test?
Tips for Writing a Thesis Statement • Your thesis should be specific—it should only address what you will discuss in your paper and what you have evidence to support. • Your thesis should be the last sentence of the first paragraph of your paper. • If your paper topic changes, your thesis must change also.
