Dorothea L. Dix by: Addison Bracken Dorothea L. Dix was born on April 4, in Hampden, Maine 1802. I chose this person because I did not know much about her and I wanted to learn. Dorothea Dix was the eldest of three children. Her father, Joseph Dix, was an religious fanatic and a religious distributor of religious tracts, who made Dorothea stitch and paste the tracts together, a chore Dorothea hated. At age 12 Dorothea left home in Maine to live with her grandmother. Soon after moving in with her grandmother, Dorothea was sent to live with her grandmother’s sister, Mrs. Duncan, to become a “lady’’. At one of the parties Mrs. Duncan had held, Dorothea met with Edward Bangs, who offered to help Dorothea get started teaching in a school for young girls. By the age 14 she was teaching in a school in MA. During this time Dorothea had written a few books, that included her textbook, Conversations on Common Things. Dorothea’s childhood was not a happy time. Her childhood left permanent scars on her mental and physical health. Dorothea died in Trenton, NJ, July 17, of an illness. Dorothea was buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA. Dorothea has a fountain for thirsty horses that Dorothea gave to the city of Boston, MA to honor the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. Dorothea is remembered as a caring person who did a lot to improve the lives of others.
Donn Fendler Do you know who was lost for nine days in the Maine wilderness - all alone? Well, that person is Donn Fendler. Donn was lost on Mount Katahdin when he was a twelve year old boy. Donn was born on July 17, 1927 and lives in New York. Donn visits Maine regularly and talks about his adventure. He also wrote a book about it called: Lost on a Mountain in Maine and recently helped write a graphic novel called: Lost Trail. Donn grew up, got married and had a family. He was also a soldier in WWII. In 1977 he climbed Mount Katahdin again and didn’t get lost. I have the same birthday as Donn Fendler and I have read both of the books about his adventure in the Maine wilderness when he was a twelve year old boy.

Samantha Smith By Kayla Samantha Smith was a ten year old girl when she changed the history of the world. She wrote a letter to Yuri Andropov, the leader of the USSR which is what they used to call Russia, and asked about war. She said “Are you going to vote to have a war or not? If you aren’t please tell me how you are going to conquer the world.” And he wrote back to her and invited her to visit the USSR. So she went with her family and in Russia they treated her like royalty. She went to their camps and everything. Reporters followed her everywhere she went in Russia . Sadly, a couple years later, Samantha died in a plane crash when she was coming back from London where she had performed in a show. Her dad and her both died and Samantha was only 13 years old. Samantha is remembered in many ways . She has a statue at the Maine State Museum and has things named for her like a diamond, a dahlia flower, a vessel flower and an asteroid . About a month after Clyde died Margaret won a special election to finish Clyde’s senate term. Once Margaret was senator she loved living in Washington. When I think of Margaret Chase Smith I think of bravery and courage because she stood up to Joe McCarthy because he was accusing people of being communists so they lost their jobs.
