  2. A pesticide is any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying, repelling or mitigating any pest. • May be a chemical substance, biological agent (such as a virus or bacterium), antimicrobial, disinfectant or device used against any pest. What are pesticides?

  3. Cockroach sprays and baits • Insect repellents for personal use. • Rat and other rodent poisons. • Flea and tick sprays, powders, and pet collars. • Kitchen, laundry, and bath disinfectants and sanitizers. • Products that kill mould and mildew. • Some lawn and garden products, such as weed killers. • Some swimming pool chemicals. • DDT- kills disease carrying insects/plant harming insects.   4. Pollution - Point-Source Pollution: contamination coming form a specific place (pesticide spills, wash water from cleanup sites, poor disposal) -Nonpoint-Source Pollution: contamination coming form a wide area (drifting through air, running off waterway). Drawbacks

  5. Health -irritation of the skin and eyes - affects the nervous system - reproductive problems - can cause cancer Drawbacks

  6. Economic: -Can increase the amount of food that can be grown in many parts of the world. -$18.2 billion annual loss in the US without pesticides. -Increased yields and profits for farmers. Benefits

  7. Health: -some problems can be controlled through their use -prevent insect-borne diseases. • Has made farming less labor intensive. • Food is cheaper. Benefits
