Course Development Spring 2012 Fall 2012 Dr. Vess receives a Silvershein/Gutenstein Family Faculty Development Grant from the Service Learning Program at HPU Johnson Street Global Studies K-8 Magnet School is chosen as the community service partner for the course EDU 3100 Collaboration in Education course taught as a designated Service Learning course for the first time

8. HUB: Helping Understand Basics • HUB is a designated time during the day designed to provide needed intervention and targeted instruction to students based on their current academic level. • Each HPU student works directly with a small group of students during HUB time one hour per week.

9. HUB: Helping Understand Basics HPU students receive valuable experience delivering targeted interventions in a particular academic area. JSGS students benefit from the smaller student-teacher ratio academically which boosts their confidence.

10. Environmental Committee HPU students collaborate with Ms. Manka, middle school science teacher, to support her school-wide science initiatives including: • Compost Bins—design, build, and set-up bins, begin the composting process • Recycling Program—create recycling bins, educate students about the benefits of recycling • Vegetable garden—weeding and maintaining the garden, planting fall seeds, adding a walking path • Butterfly garden—creating informational and educational signage, clearing grass, mulching • Science Fair—work with small groups to brainstorm and design projects during planning, assist with actual fair • Grants & Funding—help find and apply for grants to pay for student field trips and new microscopes

14. Physical Education Committee HPU students partner with the PE teacher, Ms. Bode, to assist with fitness testing in the upper grades and to plan and implement Nutrition Fun lesson plans which teach K-2 students the benefits of healthy eating.

15. Mentoring Committee Male HPU students are paired with 5th and 6th grade male students who are in need of attention, guidance, friendship, and mentoring.

16. Curriculum night HPU students collaborate with teachers at each grade level to plan educational activities for the upcoming Math Curriculum Night. HPU students will man the grade level stations and ticket booths and will assist with the logistics that help to make Curriculum Night a success for students and their families.

17. SMART Club Committee HPU Students collaborate with the 6th grade math teacher, Ms. Bahr, to run an after-school tutoring club. HPU students help small groups of math students understand the concepts necessary to complete weekly math homework.
