  2. Revalidation of nurses and midwives in the UK

  3. What is it? Revalidation is a process by which registered nurses and midwives practicing in the UK are required to prove they remain fit to practise. The proposed model of revalidation will enhance public protection and increase public confidence in nurses’ and midwives’ continued practice and their fitness to remain on the register.

  4. Why? Public expectation Professional Standards Authority Departments of Health across the four countries of the UK

  5. So far? Engagement across the four UK countries including CNOs and senior nurses Options prepared and presented to Council of NMC Option chosen which includes element of ‘third party input’

How will it work? • All nurses and midwives revalidated every three years at their point of renewal • Those who do not revalidate will lapse from the register • Those who wish to revalidate must continually gather evidence for their revalidation based on the criteria in the revised code, standards and guidance

  7. How will it work? • Continue to remain fit to practice • Met the requirements for practice and professional development • Sought and received third party feedback which has informed reflection on their practice • Third party may be patient, carer, student (for educators) or peers • Sought and received third party confirmation that they are fit to practice – ‘confirming they are adhering to the Code and standards and are fit to practice’ • Third party may be manager, another registrant or supervisor

  8. Time? First part of the Consultation Phase ends 31st March 2014 Code and Standards launched end 2014 Revalidation introduced end 2015 Information and guidance provided Time given for the adjustment

  9. So what? Part one of the consultation focuses on implementation of the proposed model in a variety of employment settings and scopes of practice. Also information useful to redrafting the Code and developing guidance for revalidation. Questions in pro forma – online submissions ( - 42) Q 19 of interest today

PRACTICE PLACEMENT FOR PRE-REGISTRATION NURSING STUDENTS Background Transforming Your Care – future range of healthcare settings other than hospital Acknowledgement that the I and V sector do not provide the same number of practice placements as statutory sector Practice placements can lead to newly qualified staff nurses staying in the independent and voluntary sector post registration.

  15. PRACTICE PLACEMENT FOR PRE-REGISTRATION NURSING STUDENTS FINDINGS Independent and voluntary sector organisations well placed to provide practice placements Placements currently not used to their full potential Full scope of what might be potentially possible not known

PRACTICE PLACEMENT FOR PRE-REGISTRATION NURSING STUDENTS FINDINGS Practice placements in independent and voluntary sector organisations could be increased Benefits apply to both staff in the organisations and students Challenges continue to be related to turnover of registered staff; difficulty in releasing staff to be trained; skill mix; unhelpful perceptions from media coverage

PRACTICE PLACEMENT FOR PRE-REGISTRATION NURSING STUDENTS FINDINGS Enablers included increasing mentorship training opportunities for I and V sector Increased provision of link lecturers Infrastructure to support learning and assessment in practice Support for CPD for staff in I and V sector Support from home/ward managers Positive media campaign

  18. PRACTICE PLACEMENT FOR PRE-REGISTRATION NURSING STUDENTS Recommendations have been made – report to Initiative Group and then to CNO.
