  1. Unit 5 Vocabulary Academic English 10

  2. Altruistic person(adj.) A fire-fighter must be altruistic (selfless) to put herself in danger to protect others.

  3. To Assent (v. or n.) The child indicated her assent (agreement) with her parents’ rules by nodding her head. We hoped the committee would assent (agree) to our request for more funds.

  4. A Benefactor (n.) The chief benefactor (supporter) of our charity donated a lot of time and money to help those less fortunate than we are.

  5. Chivalrous man(adj.) The chivalrous (considerate) man gave his jacket to the shivering girl next to him.

  6. The Judge’ s Clemency (n.) The judge showed clemency (mercy) towards the defendant because it was his first offense and the child demonstrated real remorse for his wrongdoing.

  7. Complete the following sentences on page 67-68: #2, 6, 12, 15 and 19

  8. Dearth (n.) In areas that experience famine, there is a dearth (lack) of food or usable land for growing food.

  9. Diffident (adj.) The diffident (shy) child stood behind the tree hoping that someone would invite her to join them.

  10. Discrepancy (n.) There was a discrepancy (disagreement) between the number of items sold and the amount of money in the register.

  11. Embark (v.) The ship captain told us that in order to embark (start) on our journey we would have to embark (get on the ship).

  12. Facile (adj.) His facile (fluent) manner of speaking made everyone believe he knew more about the subject than he actually did. A facile (easy) math problem is 4+4=8.

  13. Complete the following sentences on page 67-68: #1, 5, 9, 14 and 16

  14. Indomitable (adj.) The offensive line was so indomitable (unable to be overcome) that the quarterback was not sacked once the entire season.

  15. Infallible (adj.) A person who believes that he is infallible (incapable of making mistakes) must lack self-awareness; we all fail at one time or another.

  16. Plod (v.) The snow was so deep and heavy that he had to plod (walk heavily) from his door to the car.

  17. Pungent (adj.) The smell/taste of the peppers was so pungent (overpowering) that it brought tears to my eyes.

  18. Remiss (adj.) When the parents left their two and four year old children home without a babysitter, they were obviously remiss (negligent) in their responsibilities.

  20. repose After a full 24 hours of studying, the student found his stack of books to be the perfect place for a much needed repose (rest).

  21. temerity Despite the danger warnings posted all over the park, some visitors still had the temerity (nerve) to feed the buffalos.

  22. truculent The pit bull’s truculent (hostile) reputation is not always accurate. Some of them are very sweet animals.

  23. unfeigned Children have a tendency to display unfeigned (unfaked) emotions; that’s what makes them so entertaining.

  24. virulent A king cobra is a virulent (poisonous) snake, but a lying, back-stabbing “friend” can be just as damaging to a group as a snake bite.
