Technical Services Group Finding Solutions to Make Technology Work
MSU Computer and Network Infrastructure • Automation of account creation • Network Services: DNS, DHCP, LDAP, Active Directory, Dial-in, VPN, Internet • Web Services • File Servers • Print Servers • Database Servers • Software Updates and Patches • Equipment / Service monitoring
MSU Local Area Network Pre-2002 Campus Network
MSU Local Area Network 2002 Network Upgrade How did this benefit MSU students? • Increased reliability!!! • Increased reliability!!! • Improved productivity across the board • 10x speed increase to desktops and labs • 10x increase in backbone capacity • Full capacity to Internet 2 • Higher capacity to wireless access points • Reduction in helpdesk calls • Capability to avoid network bridging problems and network loops • Capability to upgrade network software • Capability to support future protocols and features
MSU Local Area Network Internet Service • 44 Mbps to campus • 28 Mbps to dorms What do students use the Internet for? Education medium Necessity for most students Preferred way to do research News and information Communication to friends / family Hobbies and special interests Shopping Entertainment …
MSU Local Area Network (FUTURE) • Self-Defending Network • Manage Internet Traffic and Bandwidth • Better Network Security and Encryption • Better Network Monitoring • Intrusion Detection • Increase Internet bandwidth as needed • Increase physical security of equipment • Test voice over IP
ResNet Network / Internet Concept Looking into concept of combining dorm network with campus network. • Potential Benefits for both… • Potential Risks for MSU… • Desktop Support Depot and Helpdesk… • Proposal Update…
MSU Wireless Network MavNET History • Spring 1998 Tested wireless devices in library • Summer 1999Installed point-to-point wireless connection to ASA • Winter 2000Began to re-explore wireless as an alternative for COB laptop initiative • Summer 2002Replaced all existing access points • Spring 2003All general-purpose classrooms have wireless capability • Summer 2004Increase security, authentication and encryption
MSU 2002 Wireless Network Upgrade • Lucent Access Points • High Price • Apple Access Points • Frequent hardware failures • Low concurrent connections • Not upgradeable • Didn’t support emerging security protocols • Slow performance (10 Mbps) • Low radio power (20 mw) • Poor network management • Wireless network as a whole was unreliable.
MSU 2002 Wireless Network Upgrade Cisco Wireless Access Points • Multiple VLANS (MavNet, mavnet64, mavnet128) • Upgradeable (802.11g 802.11a) • Widely recognized • Leader in networking and wireless • Compatibility • Conforms to wireless network security standards • Strong power and reliability • Good Network Management • Rogue access point detection
MSU Wireless Network - MavNET Wireless Security • Computer Registration - summer 2004 • VPN (Virtual Private Network) available now • LEAP encryption and authentication available now • mavnet64 SSID • mavnet128 SSID • Flash instructions available in coming weeks
MSU Remote Access Services • Dial-In Servers • 144 lines available (fall and spring) • 96 lines available (summer) • VPN Virtual Private Network
MSU Card Access System • Combines door security, alarms, auditing, and video surveillance systems. • More flexibility for securing rooms and buildings. • Offers greater security for students on campus.
MSU Phone System • Campus and Dorm local and long-distance • Currently • Break away from InterTech 2002 • Spring 2004 – RFP for PBX phone system • Lower phone costs • Add features • Toll-Free calling to other MnSCU institutions • Additional lines in classrooms and labs • IP Telephony capabilities
Student Tech Fee Supported Printing • Doing very well over the past two years • Students are using service • Costs and waste increasing rapidly
Student Tech Fee Supported Printing Current Increase 2003 to 2004 = 200 %
Student Tech Fee Supported Printing • Costs of Printing in 2003 • Library $46,772 • COB $ 5,201 • ACC $23,755 + TOTAL $75,728 • Costs of Printing in 2004 (projected) • Library $93,000 • COB $ 6,000 • CC / Gage Labs / CSU $ 3,000 • ACC $30,000 TOTAL $132,000
Student Tech Fee Supported Printing Problems: • Runaway printing costs • Huge amount of waste • Duplicate prints or print by mistake • Print what we really don’t NEED • Print now, read later • Poor accounting • Long waiting lines in library • Limited access to printers • Security/confidentiality of prints varies across campus
Student Tech Fee Supported Printing Looking at Solution to Printing Problems • Authentication • Print Release Stations • More Printers around Library / Campus • Budget Printing • High-Demand Students Pay for Excess Prints • Easy Use for Laptop Owners
