  1. Optical Networking on TANet2 and TWAREN Ray-Ming Hsu National Center for High-performanceComputingHsinchu Science Park, Taiwan February 27.2004

  2. TANet2 and TWAREN • TANet2 is a national research network, in operation since 1998 to serve researchers in academia and research centers. • TWAREN is the next version of TANet2, re-designed with three levels of services – production, research and optical networks. • TWAREN (TaiWan Advanced Research & Eduction Network) • The production network of TWAREN has just begun operation. Its research network and optical network are being implemented. • The two networks share the same circuits for international connectivity.

  13. Grid Applications Our Center is heavily involved with grid activities. Ongoing projects include: • Eco-Grid • National Land Use Monitoring & Analysis • Structure Monitoring of Buildings for Earthquake Risk • Flood Forecasting & Monitoring • SARS Grid • 3D Imaging of Neural Structure of Fruit Fries …Other national grid activities under development

  14. Conclusions • Flexible lightpath provisioning will be deployed for both TANet2 & TWAREN • Will permit Taiwan’s R&E community to engage in transnational collaborations, in e-science and other applications. • The lightpath from Seattle to Chicago, designated as Taiwan Light, will join the other networks at TransLight. • TaiwanLight stands to participate in the US National Lambda Rail and e-Science Projects.
