  1. Plastic and Glass Group 1: Emily Leong, Brenda Fong, Melissa Phua, Zerita Wong, Tang Jia Ming

  2. Properties of plastics • Hard • Flexible • Transparent • Water proof • Insulator of heat and electricity

  3. Plastic(History) • The first man made plastic was created by Alexander Parkes who publicly demonstrated it at the 1862 Great International Exhibition in London. • Plastic was firstly known as Parkesine, then Xylonite. • Bakelite, a hard, dark plastic, was discovered by Leo Baekeland, a Belgian- born chemist in 1907 and was the first truly synthetic plastic to be patented.

  4. Uses of plastics • Disposable utensils/ Cups • Fan blades • Water bottles • Food wrap • Baskets • Some types of spectacle lens

  5. Glass (pg 1/3) Brief history of glass: 1) Phoenician merchants transporting stone actually discovered glass (or rather became aware of its existence accidentally) in the region of Syria around 5000 BC. 2) The earliest man-made glass objects, mainly non-transparent glass beads, are thought to date back to around 3500 BC, with finds in Egypt and Eastern Mesopotamia. 3) Glass was first "created" for human use by the Syrians and then later by the Romans .

  6. Glass (pg 2/3) . Common properties of glass: 1) Solid and hard material. 2) Fragile and easily breakable into sharp pieces. 3) Transparent to visible light. 4) Composed mainly of sand and alkali. 5a) Glass is 100% recyclable and one of the safest packaging materials due to its composition and properties. 5b) Glass does not deteriorate, corrode, stain or fade and therefore is one of the safest packaging materials

  7. Glass (pg 3/3) Uses of the material: • Glass bottles. (Eg. Beer bottle, fruit juice bottle, etc.) • Decoration purposes. (Eg. Glass coffee table, vase, etc.) • Eyewear. (Eg. Sunglasses lens, spectacle lens, etc.) • Windows. • Cups. (Eg. Teacups, cups with handles, etc.) • Display cabinets. • Light bulbs. • Glass pane. (Photo frame)
