  1. Friday, January 10th, 2014 • LT: I can use what I know about the status quo to start writing my story. • ET: Write for 4 minutes without stopping: • Where are you today in your Hero’s Journey story? • What is your goal for your writing today?

  3. Globalization Project LT: I can: Use vocabulary words to describe how goods move around the world by designing a map. Use information to analyze how geographers use economic indicators to label the world. ET: Materials made out of polyester, spandex, and nylon (usually things like fleeces and leggings) are synthetic. In your notebook, write down your best guess of what synthetic means.

Globalization • This is a complex term that has many parts to it. • The part that we are focusing on is how countries have become connected through buying and selling products. • Think about the McDonalds video. Where was the food grown that was served in the same restaurant chain around the world?

  6. Vocabulary • What are the three sectors of the market we have talked about? • These sectors are also referred to as the primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors. • Pri- can sometimes be a prefix that means first. • Sec- can sometimes be a prefix that means second. • Ter- can sometimes be a prefix that means third. • Using this information, which sector would be agriculture, industry, and services?

  7. Globalization Project • Today we are going to begin working on a project that involves the market sectors we have discussed and globalization. • You will create a map that shows the path that goods go through to go from raw materials to on the store shelf ready for purchase.

  8. Step One – Clothing Info • Choose one article of clothing (Shirts, jackets, and coats are easiest to see the tag on.) • From the tag, you need to record where it was made and what materials it is made out of. • Also write down the city you purchased the item in. • Work together with a person to help get the information from the tag.

  9. Step Two – Major Producers of Raw Materials • Each table has been provided a list of major raw material producers. • There are a few options for each material. • Consider where your clothing item was made, and choose the most likely option for where the material was from.

  10. Step Three – Making your Map • Choose a color that will represent your primary sector (agriculture). • Use that color to outline the country where your raw material was from. • Label the country with the country name and the material. • Repeat these steps for secondary and tertiary sectors with a new color. Follow the directions on the worksheet for labeling these countries. • If you finish early, use a laptop to finish researching your statistics.

  11. Step Four – Write a reflection • Option one: Summary • How are all three countries on your map connected and what does this show you about your clothing? • Option two: Claim paragraph • Why do geographers use market sectors (agriculture, industry, and service) to label countries as more or less developed?
