Intellectual Scope • The ethical, legal and social policy concerns arising from advances in science & medical technology (particularly at the the intersection of life sciences, biotechnology, medicine, politics, law, and philosophy) • Principles of bioethics*: Respect for persons, beneficence, justice, democratic deliberation • Methodology: foundational principlism, casuistic, communitarianism, virtue ethics, legal and political systems and analysis, deliberative decision-making, data analysis First articulated in the Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research, The National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research (The Belmont Report) (1979)
Intended Audience • Individuals with several year of relevant experience: • Post-baccalaureate experience in science, medicine, biotechnology, etc • Mid-career professionals in medicine, health care, biotechnology • And/or hold an undergraduate or advanced degree in science • Students enrolled in complementary degree programs • Medical students (3d year) • Law Student with an interest in bioethics and science policy • MBA students • Advanced undergraduate students • “Gap” year • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of bioethics & science policy • Example Job Opportunities: • Lecturer of bioethics and the law, ethicist internist, attorney at NIH or DHHS, editor of a health or law journal, ethics education and consultations, palliative medicine, hospital administrator, patient advocate, science educator, research project coordinator, bioethics center
