  2. Control mechanisms • Rights - authorization to perform tasks • Permissions – object properties that allow or deny variuos levels access to resources • Security Principals – accounts that can be authenticated.

  3. Shared folders are folders that users can access over a network. • With proper permissions, users can connect to the shared folders and use the subfolders and files in them. • Shared folders can contain: • applications, • public data, • user's personal data.

  4. Permissions • You can set three different levels of permissions on shared folders: • Full Control, • Change, • Read (The Read permission is granted by default to the Everyone group)

  5. Read permissions • The Read permission enables users to: • View file and subfolder names. • View file contents and file attributes. • Run program files.

  6. Change permissions • The Change permission enables users to: • Perform all Read permission tasks. • Add files and subfolders. • Change file contents. • Delete subfolders and files.

  7. Full Permissions • The Full Control permission enables users to: • Perform all Read and Change tasks. • Change NTFS permissions on files and folders inside the shared folder.

  8. NTFS permissions • NTFS -> New Technology File System • A file system is a part of the operating system that determines how files are named, stored, and organized on a volume.   9. File permissions • There are five standard NTFS permissions you can assign to files. • Read • Write • Read & Execute • Modify • Full Control

  10. Folder permissions • There are six standard NTFS permissions you can assign to folders. • List Folder Contents • Read • Write • Read & Execute • Modify • Full Control

  11. Permissions state • Explicit permissions appear with check marks; • Inherited permissions appear with check marks on a gray background.
