Tweeting Stocks By: Steve Mitchell
The Issue • Researchers have discovered an algorithm that can use tweets to predicts stock prices. • These algorithms can accurately predict stocks up to 11% better than most standard baseline models
Ethical Process • Step 3: Sol BThe researchers make the algorithm available to everyone. The best case is that everyone gets rich. The worst case is that no one gets rich because everyone has access to the algorithm. • Step 3: Sol AThere is no change, researchers are the only ones with access to it. The best case is the researchers make a lot of money and everyone else doesn’t loose any. The worst case is use of the algorithm by the researchers makes everyone else loose money.
Ethical Process • Step 3: I would choose Sol A. • Step 4: Yes. I would be willing for everyone to use the solution because it rewards the researchers for their hard work. It does not treat people as a means to an end. • Step 3: Sol CThe researchers do not use the algorithm. The best case is that the algorithm was not as good as predicted and it would not have helped anyway. The worst case is that the researchers loose a lot of money.
Ethical Process • Step 6: There would be a majority agreement and it would also promote the most good among people. • Step 7: I choose this solution as the be solution as an unbiased arbiter • Step 8: Realism was the most applicable philosophy in this case. • Step 5: This solution is in accord with what is natural because people should be rewarded for their hard work. This solution is the most balanced approach.
ACM Code • This solution could however be misused and violate ACM Code 1.2 which says do no harm to others. The researchers could potentially harm others by devaluing their stock. • This solution is in accord with ACM Code 2.1 which says that you should strive to achieve the highest quality of your product.
