DEISM: is the belief that REASON and observation of the NATURAL WORLD are sufficient to determine the existence of God, accompanied with the rejection of REVELATION and authority as a source of religious knowledge. Deism gained prominence in the 17th and 18th centuries during the AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT—especiallyin Britain, France, Germany and America—among intellectuals raised as CHRISTIANSwho believed in ONE GOD, but found fault with organized religion and could not believe in supernatural events such as MIRACLES, the INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURES, or the TRINITY.
Atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities. In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Most inclusively, atheism is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist. Atheism is contrasted with THEISM, which in its most general form is the belief that at least ONE DEITY EXIST. The term atheism originated from the Greek (atheos), meaning "without god(s)", used as a pejorative term applied to those thought to reject the GODS worshipped by the larger society. The first individuals to identify themselves using the word "atheist" lived in the 18th century.
