  2. Six-Word Memoir PURPOSE: At its core, the six-word memoir teaches us to be concise but also introspective. Try describing yourself in six words. Not easy, right? So, for English teachers, the six-word memoir is a great way to prompt students to focus on conveying a point in as few words as possible. The six-word memoir teaches all of us writers a critical skill: words are valuable and have meaning -- don't waste them.

  9. DIRECTIONS: Create a six-word memoir to represent YOU. You must include EXACTLY six words. Include some kind of visual element (personal pic, professional pic, art, sketches, comics, etc.). Give consideration to your font, color, and layout. Construct a paragraph in which you elaborate on your six-word memoir in terms of its meaning and/or what it conveys about you. Print your memoir with your first name and initial of your last name on the front. Include full name on the back. Be sure to eliminate/snip extra white paper space. Print your paragraph separately. Do note that both your peers and I will be your audience. I may also post some on our School Wires site, and I may hang your memoirs around the room, which students, parents, and/or administrators could see. continue for model

  10. Ms. Remar’s Example My Own Thirty Minutes of Wonderful

  11. Explanation: One of my favorite scenes in the movie Steel Magnolias involves a daughter looking for her mother’s support, explaining, “I’d rather have thirty minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special.” So many dreams are imagined through our lives, some forgotten or delayed or crushed or, if we’re lucky, realized and celebrated. What I love about that daughter’s line is the joy she wishes to find in the everyday; the seemingly little things around us can mean the most. I may never have a perfect body or a pair of Louboutins or a book contract, but I can always anticipate my thirty minutes of wonderfuls. Whether a carved pumpkin with a crooked grin in the fall, twinkling lights at the holidays, a glimpse of pink from my cherry blossom tree in spring, or my first DQ blizzard when the temperature rises, there are moments to be enjoyed all around, each day. Featured in my memoir’s background is a hidden spot along the periphery of Longwood Gardens. On that evening as dusk fell and I walked the lantern-lit path with a friend, I knew I’d found another thirty minutes of wonderful.
