1. This man has a problem … a big problem Here’s a picture of a man who is thinking about the purchase of a chain saw. Assume such a man is your neighbor. What do you suppose he is thinking? Now if he came to you for advice, what would you tell him to do? Why do you think this would be the best thing for him to do?

2. Here’s a picture of the same man in a chain saw store. What do you think he is talking about with the store clerk?

3. This is the same man as in the previous pictures. He purchased the chain saw he was looking at. Knowing that he purchased the chain saw, what can you tell me about him? Can you say anything about the character of this man?

4. Here’s a picture of the same man as in the previous pictures sitting and talking to a woman. What do you suppose they are talking about?

5. What do you suppose he is thinking? What advice would you give him? • He’s thinking about cutting down the tree • Why cut a whole tree when you can save part of it? • He could trim part of those trees and save some of them • Trees beautify property and make it more valuable • I don’t like to destroy trees • He’s thinking how to go about it. He will use a hand saw • He doesn’t have to invest in a chain saw for only one tree • He’s thinking about … the cost of doing it himself versus having someone else do it. • He’s thinking whether it pays for a couple of trees; if it would be worth it; how much longer with an axe. • He’s thinking he’ll rent a chain saw • The best way to get the job done. Chain saw is faster, but a hand saw is cheaper

What do you think he is talking about with the store clerk? • Well, price is the most important, of course • He’s wondering how he will pay for it • He’s not considering price; price means nothing compared to safety • He’s concerned whether the chain will come off the “blade” (read “guide bar”) • He’s wondering what is the best brand • He’s discussing ease of handling • Ease of controls • He’s discussing the warranty (guarantee) • Whether is has a direct drive • Whether it has a gas protector • He’s asking about the specifications

7. Knowing that he purchased the chain saw, what do you suppose he is thinking about while using his chain saw? • He’s happy he bought the chain saw • Lots of time saved • He’s happy with the chain saw; he made the right decision • Sure beats bucking with an axe • How much easier it is to cut a tree with a chain saw than a hand saw • He seems to be saying: “Why didn’t I buy a chain saw sooner?” • He’s a little frightened; he doesn’t know how to go about it, but he’s willing to learn • If he gets caught in that blade … • He’s watching what he’s doing; otherwise he’ll lose a limb • He looks scared of it • He better think safety

8. What do you suppose they are talking about? • He’s very happy to cut his own wood for his fireplace – real proud of himself • He’s telling her how much he saved by cutting it himself • They’re talking about the logs; how pleased he is with himself • He’s saying: “The chain saw pays for itself. There’s a $300 • job, and you will be able to use the chain saw afterwards. • What a good buy that chain saw was. Cut wood costs, save money • The woman is looking to the enjoyment of the fireplace … she might have questioned the investment before this, before sitting in front of the fireplace • She’s proud of her husband • The man and woman are congratulating each other on finally getting around to buying a chain saw and cutting firewood • She is complimenting him on his ability and how handy it is to have a man around in the house • She is thinking that possibly it was easier for her husband to use a chain saw
