First put the large number inside the division bar and the smaller number outside For Example: 895 ÷ 5 5 8 9 5
Now try to divide the number in the hundreds column (8) by 5: In this case, the closest multiple of 5 is: 1 x 5 = 5 The 1 is placed in the hundreds column directly above the 8 1 5 8 9 5 The 5 from 1 x5 = 5 goes directly below the 8 -5 The number from the tens column is then dropped down next to the 3 3 9 The remainder, the difference between 5 & 8, goes under the 5
Now try to divide this new number (39) by 5: In this case, the closest multiple of 5 is:7 x 5 = 35 The 7 is placed directly above the 9, in the TENS column 1 7 5 8 9 5 -5 3 9 The 35 from 7x5 = 35 goes directly below the 39 -3 5 The number from the units column is then dropped down next to the 4 4 5 The remainder, the difference between 39 & 35, goes under the 35
Now try to divide this new number (45) by 5: In this case,9 x 5 = 4 5 The 9 is placed directly above the 5, in the UNITS column 1 7 9 5 8 9 5 -5 3 9 -3 5 4 5 The 45 from 9x5 = 45 goes directly below the 45 -4 5 In this question there isno remainder, 0 so 895 ÷ 5 = 179 For more maths help visit: www.y6maths.blogspot.com
