The differences between meeting minimum college admissions and being a competitive college applicant • Academics are still weighed heavily by most admissions offices • More is better if your student can handle it! • Meeting minimum college admissions reqs does not set your student apart from the rising competition for limited college seats (even at state universities) • Are they skilled & interested in particular subjects? If so… • They should take additional years during high school of those subjects
The differences between meeting minimum college admissions and being a competitive college applicant • What about outside of the classroom? • Quality not quantity • Commitment over time to a few extracurricular activities (e.g. sports, faith based orgs, clubs, community service etc.) vs random activities • Start early in high school career, if not earlier • Growth over time (e.g. club member V.P. or publicist) • Initiative (e.g. start a club, address a need in community or school) • What they do at home and/or in community counts! • = all of above networking future references
