  1. DR. EDWARD FEIGENBAUM • B. 1936, TURING AWARD 1994 Parker Peelen CSCE-221H Spring 2014

  2. Dr. Edward Feigenbaum • Born in Weehawken, NJ in 1936 • BS and PhD from Carnegie Mellon University (1956 and 1960) • Artificial intelligence • “Father of expert systems” • Founding member of Stanford CS department

  3. Artificial Intelligence • “Expert systems” = artificial intelligence that uses knowledge of experts in any field (medical, business, etc.) • Get computers to make theories from data • Explain those data • Make predictions about new data • Coined phrases “Knowledge is power,” “Expert systems”

  4. Feigenbaum’s Research • Research suggestion from Nobel Prize winner Joshua Lederberg: Induce 3D structure of chemicals from their mass spectrograms • Later project could deduce new rules • After chemical structures, Feigenbaum’s lab expanded to medicine, molecular genetics, x-ray crystallography, and pulmonary analysis. Also a “shell” (template) version. • Heuristic DENDRAL • META-DENDRAL • MYCIN, PUFF, ONCOCIN, MOLGEN, CHRYSALIS, and EMYCIN = = =

  5. Awards All awarded for pioneering work in AI Turing Award: “For pioneering the design and construction of large scale artificial intelligence systems, demonstrating the practical importance and potential commercial impact of artificial intelligence technology” IEEE Intelligent System’s AI Hall of Fame: “significant contributions to the field of AI and intelligent systems” Computer History Museum Fellow: “for his pioneering work in artificial intelligence and expert systems” IEEE CS Computer Pioneer Award: “pioneering work in Artificial Intelligence, including development of the basic principles and methods of knowledge-based systems and their practical applications” • 1986 National Academy of Engineering • 1991 American Academy of Arts and Sciences • 1991 Feigenbaum Medal • 1994 Turing Award • 1994-1997 Chief Scientist of the U.S. Air Force • 2006 Am. Assoc. for AI Distinguished Service Award • 2011 IEEE Intelligent System’s “AI Hall of Fame” • 2012 Fellow of Computer History Museum • UC Berkeley and Stanford positions
