Why MST? What Is The Device?* Developed by S. Greathead; SJFC GMST Graduate
Science • I am a scientific device that depends on friction for starting and stopping. I would continue moving forever, if not for the force of friction. • I rely on air pressure for smooth operation. • The key to my movement relies on converting the direction and magnitude of force. • My energy is supplied by a biological force. • My center of gravity changes as I change direction. What Am I?
Math • My design is based on circles and triangles. • The distance I cover is proportional to my rate of rotation. • If my individual parts are not in the correct ratios, I will not work efficiently. However, the ratios are variable. • The stability and efficiency of my structure depends on trigonometry and geometry. What Am I?
Technology • My material design has grown considerably lighter and stronger since I first became popular around the turn of the 20th century. • I contain many gears and moving parts. • A little bit of grease in my bearings helps me run smoothly. • I come in designs that fit many sizes and shapes. I am gender biased. What Am I?
Math – Science - Technology • I am a physical technology (transportation) device based on circles for movement and triangles for structural soundness. • My energy of motion is caused by a biological force which is transformed through gear ratios. • My ergonomic design varies depending on the supplier of the biological force. • My efficiency is due to very low friction, optimal air pressure, the correct gear ratios, low mass and my ability to “cut” through the wind-aerodynamics*. (*Also the aerodynamics of the biological force!) What Am I?
