Writing The Prospectus and Defining Ourselves Presented by Heather L. Lynch
What comes to mind when you imagine writing your prospectus?
“The only journey is the journey within.”- Rainer Maria Rilke
Where to Start? • The Literature! • Helpful first steps: • Course Readings • Tip: Be thoughtful about designing your program of study. • Discussions with Advisor • Research Librarian • Directed Reading
So Much to Read… I focused on the work of researchers who… • Make me nod my head as I read their work. • Talk about ideas that have room for development? • Would get along well at the ideological “dinner table” or… • Fill in gaps for each other.
Taking Risks • “Avid Gamers” • “Symbiotic Flow” • Mediated Discourse Methods • Understandings of Quality • Participant Selection- emic/etic
Building My Committee • Criteria for My Committee: • Shared Philosophies About Research • Shared Perspectives Relating to What Matters in Literacy Education Writ Large • Productivity in their Own Work • Responsivity Towards Me Over Time • Interest in My Future Goals • Faculty Research Status
Show Time! • Logistics: • Practice ahead of time. • Get there early! • Have presentation available by multiple means. • Be prepared to record notes without distracting you for being in the moment. • Remind yourself that you know your stuff! • Aesthetics: • Coffee? • Snacks? • Have everything ready before professors and supporters show up.
Celebrate! • Revel in the successes along the way (even the little ones)! • Include your loved ones in moments of celebration. • Take time to collectively look at your accomplishments. • Remind yourself of how far the journey has taken you!
“The only journey is the journey within.”- Rainer Maria Rilke
