  3. Definition • Bearings are used in engine to support and protect the rotating parts allowing them to turn freely. • Connecting rod bearings and the crankshaft main bearings are called split-sleeve types, which mean they are in two halves, called inserts, slippers or shells.

  4. Material Used • Cummins main bearing is manufactured using sintered bronze, which holds oil to reduce friction, and various metals which are cast in place to make a soft slippery surface for really heavy shafts.

  6. Functions: • Reduces Friction • It holds the crankshaft in place and prevents the forces created by the piston, transmitted to the crankshaft by the connecting rods from dislodging it. • It forces the crank to convert the reciprocating movement into rotation.
