Vidyo links disrupted during IMC  Info (vidyo links, IP for H.323) „hidden“ 

  5. Video conference / CERN, FNAL Moderators: 42 (12), 50 % new (10%) Multiple channels for announcement/recruiting WG VC (Kate, Michael, Marzena, Uta) Manuals for VC for local organisers Manual and twiki for moderators Training for mod. at CERN 5.3. Preparation of rooms (teachers´ lab, CMS centre, 1 East and other rooms) Reward for moderators: T-shirt from the CERN shop (Rolf/Maureen)

  6. Internal Communication Registration opened 1. Schedule Institutes´ Profiles Vidyo tests Info: measurements Question time Info: video conference Dates announced July Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr 2014 2013 • Circulars ~ 1 per month • archive of circulars on „Local Organisation“ webpage, + more important material, e.g. manual for video conference, step-by-step orga list, templates … • www.physicsmasterclasses.org/index.php?cat=local_organisation&page=organisation

  7. Publicity CERN press release on March 10  http://press.web.cern.ch/press-releases/2014/03/10th-edition-international-masterclasses-particle-physics-attract-more-10000 Additional press release English/German/French (incl. section for local activities) to be distributed by the institutes For media coverage see „In the media“ webpage www.physicsmasterclasses.org/index.php?cat=press 27 entries in March 16 in April Coming soon: article on IMC in CERN courier, June edition

  8. Central organisation at TU Dresden Michael, Uta, student assistants WG Video conference Kate Shaw, Michael Hauschild, Marzena Lapka, Uta SG (Steering group) Farid Ould-Saada, Michael Kobel, Ken Cecire, Despina Hatzifotiadou, Pete Watkins, Yiota Foka, Ralf Averbeck, Nicolas Arnaud, Vava Gligorov, Uta Bilow Organisation at Notre Dame Marge, Mitch, Ken, teachers NEWS: TU Dresden senior fellowship for Ken (Sept 14 – Feb 15) • IMC headquarter in Dresden!

  9. MICAb: Masterclass Institutes Collaborating in the Americas and Beyond • New Masterclass Institutes in • Colombia (2) • Ecuador • Chile • Jamaica • Mexico • with further growth anticipated • Funded by CMS and ATLAS • Additional support for Chile from Notre Dame Luksic grant • Workshops to prepare teachers and physicists • Connect with Fermilab • Use pilot QuarkNet Data Workshop format • Participation of faculty was very important

  10. CMS Masterclass – WZH path Stable product, well-received e/m , W+/W-; J/Y, U, Z, H mass plot 22 countries, 69 institutes, 12 languages New: H  gg More data Google spreadsheet Portuguese Google spreadsheet issues Slow down or freeze with large number of students. Workaround 2014, new solution 2015 • Particle ID agreementrates: • Electron 90% • Muon 93% • W cand 91% • Dilepton (Z cand) 92%

  11. ALICE – strange particles • 12 masterclasses in 2014 • New institutes: • Cape Town (South Africa) • Cairo (Egypt) • Curitiba (Brazil) • Warsaw University of Technology (Poland) • Feedback: • In general very positive • Occasional comments about the videoconference (quality of sound etc) • Comment from Brazil: they would prefer to do masterclasses in their spring • In addition to Linux systems, usedUbuntu Virtual Machine on Windows • Measurement • First Part • Invariant mass histograms • Combination of results • Second Part • Analyse / mass plots / fits • Find number of K0s, Λ, anti-Λ • Calculate yields, strangeness

  12. ALICE – RAA • Investigation of quark-gluonplasmafrom heavy ioncollisions • Onemasterlcassday in 2014 • Institutes: • Cairo • Darmstadt • Frankfurt • Prague • Meaurementunchanged in 2014 • Notechnicalproblems • All studentsfoundtheq-gplasma

  13. TOTEM • 10th December 2013 • Pilot activity, Case Western Reserve University, U.S. • http://tinyurl.com/ny5gomp • MasterClasses “structure” (10 students) • ROOT analysis code only on linux • Students examined 200 events • Videocon with TOTEM Control Room • 15th April 2014 • Pilot activity, Siena University, Italy • MasterClasses (20 students) • Improved version of the code • Runs on Windows 7 (ROOT package & analysis code stand-alone) Student comments Dec 10 used to improve for Apr 15 with good results.

  14. ATLAS W path • R± : 1.33 ± 0.20 (2013: 1.24) • Cuts corrected • Descriptions improved • Exercises adjusted • Future plans: • Increase students´ success • Decrease students´ difficulties • data selection • event display features, e.g. show primary vertex

  15. ATLAS Z path More data, more datasets Purified diphoton sample Improvements in OPloT Individual distribution for the different 4-l-combinations Improvements in Hypatia Nice results, happy feedback Students still find too many 4-l-events Discussion on the length of the measurement (are 50 events too many?)

  16. LHCb 21 institutes, 7 dates Big success! Generally good feedback Often: measurement too simple  Diversify into „simpler“ and „harder“ version Discussion on amount of preparation at school  offer material to schools and teachers Installation of software complicated  should be made easier severe vidyo problems  better coordination with vidyo support at CERN Mass plot needed a script google.docs for mass plot and sharing results video conference: bit repetitive, location not optimal Look for better room, check concept

  17. Astroparticle physics Masterclasses IceCube Masterclass http://icecube.wisc.edu/masterclass/home Pilot: 21.5.2014, 5 institutions, 100 students Analysis: replicate analysis of first evidence for an astrophysical neutrino flux For 2015: More institutions Joining IMC? Multilingual content Add more analyses Create classroom activities • Auger Masterclass • http://auger.colostate.edu/ED/ • Events recorded at Pierre Auger Observatory • 1 % publically available • Analysis of cosmic particle showers • Pilot tests in German Netzwerk Teilchenwelt • collecting feedback and evaluation • developing framework and Masterclass-package

  18. In conclusion • International Masterclasses: • Continuetogrow • Continuetoimprove • Had a great 2014! • Andmoretocome... • Thankyou, IPPOG, fortheopportunityandthesupport! • Check out theupcomingarticle in CERN Courier.
