This project supported by AAHSL funding aims to sustain assessment practices while planning scalable outcomes for libraries. The Task Force facilitated a cohort of 21 institutions and analyzed data from 2003, highlighting gaps and desired services. Key initiatives include supporting R&D efforts and promoting a culture of assessment within AAHSL to enhance teaching and research. Participants gained valuable insights, and ongoing research projects aim to further improve library services.

Task Force on Quality Assessment Sustaining Assessment While We Plan Scalable Outcomes
LibQUAL+ • Through AAHSL funding support (split registration costs)—TF facilitated a second cohort of 21 institutions • 2003—instrument completed by 13,000 users from 308 institutions internationally, including college and research, health sciences, military, public and state libraries
AAHSL Libraries • Reported highest minimum and desired gap scores for dimensions of access to information and personal control • Desired and Perceived AAHSL ratings of “Library as Place” scored lowest amongst all library types
Most Significant Gaps—AAHSL Aggregate • Electronic Journal Collections Required for Work (-0.16) • Electronic Resources Accessible from Home or Office (-0.08)
Most Desired Service Dimensions—Aggregate • Electronic Information Resources (8.36) • Electronic Resource Access (8.57) • Consistent with 2002 results
3rd AAHSL Cohort for 2004 • Partial AAHSL subsidy (may be final year for direct financial support) • Continued consulting, reviewing and analyzing AAHSL aggregate data
Graduate/Professional Students • Marked Adequacy Gaps for Quiet Space (-0.12) and Community space for group learning (-0.03)
5 Unique AAHSL Queries • Electronic Resources matching information needs—reflected only negative gap
Service Quality Academy/R&D • Initiated Nominations for three AAHSL member institutions (J. Shedlock, L. Thompson and D. Joubert) • Goal: to advance R&D efforts and questions for analysis pertaining to the AAHSL aggregate
Service Quality Academy/R&D • Intense agenda, with 2 ½ days of quantitative stats and 2 ½ days of qualitative research techniques • Participants gained a new respect for the grounded research and development involved in creating the LibQUAL+ instrument.
Service Quality Academy/R&D • J. Shedlock acknowledged benefits to assist his role as Chair of Annual Stats. • Potential research project that closely examines the role of “Library as Place” presented in the LibQUAL+ survey
Service Quality Academy/R&D • D. Joubert (with basic knowledge of SPSS)—interested in pursuing some of the correlations between aspects of AAHSL quantitative data and LibQUAL+ results • ARL may be able to provide some consulting.
Service Quality Academy/R&D • T. Lee, J. Shedlock and R. Forsman contributed a paper and poster session at 2003 MLA Conference related to LibQUAL+ AAHSL pilot. • T. Lee authored an article on behalf of the work of the task force to be published in a work entitled “From Data to Action: Libraries Act on Their LibQUAL+ Findings” (Haworth Press, 2003).
Is there Life after LibQUAL+? • In September a new course was charted in support of transition to a more scalable outcomes assessment program for AAHSL and its members. • Strategies and Goals developed to advance a culture of assessment within AAHSL
Is there Life after LibQUAL+? -- Identify existing standards to measure library outcomes for supporting and enhancing teaching, research and evidence-based care. --Determine what new standards need to be developed to measure library outcomes. --Monitor AAMC efforts on outcomes assessment.
Is there Life after LibQUAL+? --Analyze and interpret how mixed methods may be used to show libraries improve the quality of student and faculty work life. -- Continue to support LibQUAL+ assessment and development, other qualitative measurement activities and new initiatives in outcomes assessment.
